New California law requires openers
to have backup batteries.

It's the law!

In 2018 California legislators passed senate bill SB 969 requiring California homes to have backup batteries on any openers installed or replaced after July 1, 2019. The law also requires that if your garage door is replaced after July 1, 2019 and your existing opener does not have a backup battery (or is not backup battery compatible so that a battery can be added), it too will have to be replaced.
